How to Use Olive Oil in Cocktails

Adding olive oil to martinis might seem weird at first, but it's become one of our absolute favorite cocktail ingredients! It brings a smooth and silky texture to the drink, giving each sip a richer feel. It's not just about the taste; it adds a touch of luxury to the whole experience. You can transform your classic dry martini or dirty martini by adding a dash of olive oil!

Plus, our friend Maddison Hillhouse at Dripping Distilling taught us all about fat washing with olive oil! What is fat washing you ask? Fat washing allows for limitless flavor options for cocktails. This clever technique adds savory flavor to Spirits by infusing your spirit with fat. Fat washing with olive oil specifically imparts a unique, rich flavor to spirits, elevating cocktails with a velvety texture and a nuanced, savory undertone.

So, if you're up for trying something new with your martini, toss in a bit of olive oil. It's a simple way to step up your drink game. Cheers to keeping it interesting!

Ingredients:

For the Blood Orange Fat Wash:

For Simple Syrup:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

For the Martini:

  • 2 oz Blood Orange Fat Wash
  • 1 oz fresh blood orange juice (if out of season, regular orange juice)
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • Blood orange slice or wheel, garnish (if out of season orange peel or wheel garnish)
  • Drops of Blood Orange Infused Olive Oil, garnish

Tools:

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Strainer
  • Martini glasses (or rocks glass if you don't have)

Directions:

For the Blood Orange Fat Wash:

  1. Shake to combine all ingredients
  2. Steep for 24 hours, chilled.
  3. Freeze until oil is solid, then strain.

    For Simple Syrup:

    1. In a saucepan, combine equal part sugar and water.
    2. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sugar completely dissolves. This usually takes a few minutes.
    3. Allow the mixture to come to a simmer. You don't need to boil it; just heat it enough to dissolve the sugar thoroughly.
    4. Keep stirring until all the sugar has completely dissolved. You'll notice the liquid becoming clear.
    5. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove the saucepan from heat immediately. You don't want to overheat the syrup.
    6. Let the simple syrup cool to room temperature. This usually takes around 15-20 minutes.
    7. Once cooled, pour the simple syrup into a clean, airtight container or mason jar.

      For the Martini:

      1. Juice your blood oranges until you have 1oz of juice.
      2. Chill your martini glasses.
      3. Combine all ingredients, shake in martini shaker, & strain into chilled martini glass.
      4. Garnish with blood orange wheel and a little bit of Texas Hill Country Olive Co. Blood Orange Infused Olive Oil (we suggest dotting on).
