Donut Sticks: Strawberry Balsamic Frosting & Texas Olive Oil - Texas Hill Country Olive Co.

Cereal for breakfast? That's so last week! Looking for a delicious treat to make for breakfast or dessert? Look no further than these delicious donuts with strawberry frosting! They're the perfect sweet treat for breakfast on the go, or a brunch snack for loved ones. And homemade donuts are the best part of any pastry filled meal, if we do say so ourselves.

We love to use Strawberry Balsamic in our frostings to create a flavor that is the perfect balance of sweet and tart, with fresh strawberry flavor. But don't opt for grocery store balsamic - try our Texas Hill Country Olive Co. Strawberry Balsamic Vinegar instead! With a white balsamic base, it's not too heavy, and adds the perfect touch to make the most mouth watering strawberry icing you've ever tried. PLUS it only contains 3 simple ingredients - it's that easy to make!

And forgo that unhealthy melted butter and opt for the best Texas olive oil instead! Now before you ask - yes, you can bake (or fry) your donuts in Extra Virgin Olive Oil! Our Sola Stella EVOO has a smoke point of 410 degrees Fahrenheit, and the ideal baking/frying temperature of these donuts is 375 degrees. So not only is it doable, but olive oil is a much healthier alternative to other traditional frying oils like vegetable or canola.

We prefer these baked donuts over using a deep fryer - another hack to minimize the unhealthy aspects of your typical donuts. Now are these donuts healthy? No way! But are they better for you than the buttery-fried donuts you're used to? Definitely.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg to start the donut batter.
  3. In a separate bowl, take a large bowl and combine the extra virgin olive oil, milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Whisk until well blended.
  4. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough comes together. Do not overmix; a few lumps are fine, so no need for a food processor.
  5. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it gently a few times until smooth. Divide the dough into two equal portions.
  6. Take one portion of dough and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Cut the rectangle into strips, approximately 1 inch wide and 6 inches long.
  7. Hold both ends of a strip and twist it a few times in opposite directions to create a twist shape. Place the twisted dough strip on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat this step with the remaining strips.
  8. Bake the donut sticks in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. While the donut sticks are baking, prepare the strawberry balsamic frosting. In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, strawberry puree, and balsamic vinegar. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
  10. Once the donut sticks are done, remove them from the oven and place them on a cooling rack. Wire rack preferred.
  11. Top each donut stick with the strawberry balsamic frosting. You can also drizzle the frosting over the donut sticks if desired or use a piping bag (or cup ziploc bag) to create designs. Store leftover frosting in an airtight container for future use.
  12. Garnish as desired
  13. Serve the donut sticks immediately warm or at set sit at room temperature and enjoy!
